Dance training in Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Clogging, Lyrical, Contemporary, Hip-Hop. Ages 2 to Adult Claudia Cotter, called Miss Corky, by students and friends, is a native of Greensboro, N. C. At the age of four, she started her tap and ballet training with a very well known dance teacher, Gene Stroud. She continued her dance training expanding to jazz and pointe for the next 24 years. During the later years that she studied with Mr. Stroud, she also attended ballet and pointe classes at Dormany Studios under the direction of Dr. Joseph Lavenouf who became one of the first Dance Master’s at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In her high school years, she was one of the founders of the Grimsley Whirling Boots Dance Team and was the first Dance Captain. After high school she was a cheerleader for the North Carolina professional basketball team, the Carolina Cougars, and helped choreograph and teach classes not only for Mr. Stroud, but also another studio in Greensboro. In 1971 she was referenced by Mr. Stroud to take over a dance studio in Madison, N. C. where the owner/instructor’s husband had been transferred to another part of the state. Claudia is now in her 40th year of teaching in Rockingham County and is a member of the N. C. Clogging Association. In November 2010 she was inducted into the Carolina Dance Masters Chapter 13, Dance Masters of America certified to teach Ballet and Jazz. During the past 40 years she has continued to expand her dance training and keep up with the latest trends by attending numerous dance conventions and workshops each year. Her clogging knowledge she owes to Eddie White and Chip Summey. In 1984 she took her students to their first dance competition and since that time she has attended regional and national competitions all over eastern United States. Her studio has received numerous regional and national awards in all types of dance for high scores. In 2006 Claudia received one of the “Teacher of the Year” Awards at Nationals. She, as a teacher, has received choreography, judge’s awards, and awesome Studio Awards. Claudia believes she has a God gifted talent for dance and choreography. Her biggest thrill in life next to having attended a live Carolina Panthers Football game is to have had the chance to touch the lives of so many children through dance. Some have gone to New York and pursued a dance career and some have opened up their own dance studios in other parts of the state. The best part is she now has the honor of teaching her former students’ children and taking them to competition.
