Valerie R. Burns, LPC, CSAC, NCC

Valerie Burns is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC), licensed by the State of Wisconsin and the National Board for Certified Counselors (NCC). She graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 2011, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison with her Master of Science in Counseling Psychology (MS) in 2014. Valerie has treated mental health & substance use disorders in a variety of settings, including inpatient, residential, correctional, intensive outpatient, and outpatient programs. These experiences have allowed Valerie to see how adversity affects all walks of life. It has also helped Valerie appreciate the commonality of the human experience and has reinforced her confidence that all of us can receive relief, healing, and experience joy. Additional Training Valerie has completed additional training in the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), among other modalities. She continues to train in Pia Mellody’s Post-Induction Therapy model at the Healing Our Core Issues Institute, which is a developmental and relational trauma model that addresses the impact of trauma on adult functioning. Areas of Focus Valerie’s therapeutic approaches include: Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Post-Induction Therapy, and Somatic (Body-Centered) Psychotherapy. A mindfulness approach underlies all of these modalities, and explores the concept that people experience and hold trauma not only through their thoughts and emotions, but also simultaneously through their bodies. Valerie’s therapeutic approaches focus on resiliency and how to restore balance to the body and the mind in working with: • Stress and Anxiety Disorders • Mood and Depressive disorders • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder • Adult Children of Alcoholics or Addicts • Bipolar Disorder • Substance Use and Addiction Disorders Valerie works with Adolescents (Ages 14+), and Adults (Ages 18+).
